" I found I could say things with color and
shapes that I couldn't say any other way ⎯
things I had no words for. "
- Georgia O'keeffe
I am an expressionist, nurtured and inspired by the
vibrant landscape of my adopted home, California.
Although I have traveled and lived in many places,
none resonates with me as deeply. My paintings
are an abstraction of the many feelings I
experience for this land.
I do most of my work indoors and often late at
night. I build each piece intuitively, layering
different media and colors. For added depth, I
may include strata of handmade paper, metallic mesh, and fabric. I take much pleasure in
the tactile nature of my materials, endlessly exploring different contrasts of texture as well
as color.
Once a painting is near completion, I let it mature for several days, moving it from place to
place within my home, observing how it responds to different intensities and angles of
sunlight. To further explore perspectives, I hang certain pieces in a window, lighting the
canvas from the rear like a stained glass panel. At this stage, I study each piece
extensively before I make any final changes.
After a long night of painting, seeing a work in the sunlight for the first time is often like
making a new discovery, like what a potter must experience as the kiln opens to reveal the
magic that the mix of heat and earthen glazes has created. ❖
